Welcome to Ethiopian Renaissance Society
The Ethiopian Renaissance Society (ERS), a vibrant community dedicated to fostering unity and cultural enrichment among Ethio-Canadians in Saskatoon. Our mission is to address social challenges, support Ethiopian families, and assist new immigrants in their integration journey. By preserving our rich heritage and collaborating with local and national partners, we strive to create a thriving and supportive environment for all our members. Join us in our commitment to making a positive impact both locally and globally.

The Ethiopian Renaissance Society (ERS) works to unite Ethio-Canadians, support vulnerable Ethiopian families, and aid new Ethiopian immigrants.
ERS focus on preserving heritage, collaborating with local organizations, and partnering with similar national associations.
To promote cooperation among Ethio-Canadians and advance cultural development while addressing socioeconomic challenges faced by vulnerable children and families in Ethiopia through coordinated fundraising and resource support.
To research, participate and implement programs that assist new Ethiopian immigrants in economic, social, educational, and other areas, while also supporting activities that preserve Ethiopian historical, linguistic, and cultural heritage. .
To procure and introduce cultural and historical artifacts to members and residents of Saskatoon, while collaborating with local government, schools, the health sector, and employers to better serve the community.
In recognition of the existence of other Ethio-Canadian associations in Canada which share the same values and purposes as the Society, to become a full participant in their effort towards the greater good at the national level.
ERS Community Events

ERS Commemorates 129th Adwa Victory
ERS celebrated the 129th Adwa Victory on March 2, 2024, honoring Ethiopia’s triumph over Italy in 1896. Led by Emperor Menelik II, Ethiopia’s army secured Africa’s first major victory against a European power. The event featured drama, poems, songs, and speeches, remembering the heroes who preserved Ethiopia’s freedom.

Women's discussion session
The Ethiopian Renaissance Society (ERS) hosted a half-day discussion for women and young females in Saskatoon on November 9, 2024, at Sacred Heart Chaldean Church. The event, attended by 15-20 participants, provided a platform for sharing experiences, best practices, and challenges faced by Ethiopian diaspora women.

Ethiopian New Year celebration
The Ethiopian Renaissance Society (ERS) celebrated Ethiopian New Year on September 14, 2024, at Coors Event Center, Saskatoon. Over 200 guests, including city officials and diverse community members, attended. ERS thanked Coors Event Center for the free venue and everyone who made the event a success.

What We Do And Get Involved
The Society is primarily engaged in a wide range of social, cultural, and educational activities. These activities fall under six core headings:
- Organizing regular and occasional educational programs and seminars on various issues around Ethiopian history, culture, economy, and development issues.
- Promoting special program for children and parents for improving their Amharic language, understand their culture and history of Ethiopia. Support will be demanded from Saskatoon city administration.
- Organizing discussion forums and dialogues on various issues pertaining to common local and global agenda.
- Promoting Ethiopian culture (including values, best practices, foods and diets, songs and poems.etc).
- Organize occasional get together, small gatherings, trips, and other related outdoor activities to meet the best interest of the society.
- Activities for families and kids to perpetuate and strengthen Ethiopian identity and culture.
- Welcoming newcomers and provide them all possible supports until they adjust to the new environment.
- Render free professional advisory services to its members (for example, legal consultation, driving teaching, help complete applications, guarantor services, ...etc). A guideline will be developed by EC on the type and manner of providing these services.
- Issuing supporting letters to governmental and non-governmental organization within and outside of Canada when members need.
- Provide gifts/ small financial token to members whose child graduate from university. A guideline will be developed by EC on the amount and nature of such gifts.

- Facilitate sympathy and empathy for grieved families because of death of its member.
- Provide in kind/financial support to members who lost someone. A guideline will be developed by EC on this provision.
- Collect different resources (such as books, gifts, cloths, furniture…etc) to support the neediest communities in Ethiopia.
- Work with doner organizations and other philanthropic societies to mobilize resources and support communities in Ethiopia who needs most.
- Involve in need-based sponsorship of immigrants from refugee camps across Sub-Saharan Africa and Middle East who were forced to leave Ethiopia and are living in precarious circumstances. An internal guideline will be prepared on how this activity will be implemented.

Location
Ethiopia, in the Horn of Africa, is bordered by Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Kenya, and is renowned for its rich history, vibrant cultures, and stunning landscapes from highland plateaus to arid deserts.
Administration
Since 1991, Ethiopia has had a parliamentary system with a Prime Minister. The nation is divided into 14 semi-autonomous regions. Despite progress, media access remains limited to state-owned networks.
Humanitarian community
Ethiopia, Africa's tenth largest country, spans about 1,122,000 square kilometers. It features the Ethiopian Highlands, the Ogaden Desert, lush forests, fertile plains, and the Blue Nile, supporting over 80 ethnic groups.
Population
Ethiopia, Africa's second-most populous country with over 120 million people, has major cities like Addis Ababa and Adama. With 17% urban and 87.72% rural population, it is religiously diverse: 62.8% Christian, 33.9% Muslim, and 2.6% traditional faiths. Literacy rates are 49% for females and 59% for males.
Topography
Ethiopia boasts stunning contrasts, with 25 mountains over 4,000 meters, including Ras Dejen at 4,620 meters. In contrast, Dalol is the hottest place, averaging 34.6°C. This dramatic range of landscapes makes Ethiopia uniquely fascinating.
Climate
Ethiopia, between the Equator and Tropic of Cancer, has three climate zones: Tropical, Subtropical, and Cool. It has four seasons: heavy rain in Summer, harvest in Spring, frost in Winter, and showers in Autumn, with May being the hottest month.
Language
Ethiopia is a multi-ethnic state with 84 languages and 200 dialects. Major languages include Amharic (29.3%), Oromiffa (33.8%), and Tigrigna (6%). The country also has its own unique alphabet and numeric system.
Calendar and Time
Ethiopia uses the Julian calendar with 12 months of 30 days and a 13th month of 5 or 6 days, making it 7.5 years behind the Gregorian calendar. New Year is celebrated on September 11th. In the GMT +3 time zone, Ethiopian midday and midnight are both at six o'clock.

Ethiopian music is richly diverse, with a unique modal system and traditional instruments like the krar and masenqo. Its dance features rhythmic movements that vividly express cultural stories and traditions.
